The David Lean Foundation was established by a Deed of Trust dated 19 November 1997 and registered as a charity on 23 December 1997 number 1067074.

The trustees of the Foundation are Anthony Alan Reeves and James Gilbert Moore.

The Foundation's principal current and future source of income is royalties in connection with four of the major films directed by Sir David Lean. The film rights are owned in David Lean Films Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Foundation. The royalties are uncertain in amount and duration and depend (inter alia) upon the promotion of the films by their media company owners in the theatrical television video and DVD markets.
